How to lighten your skin naturally

A beautiful African young lady

There is a growing  trend among young ladies and some men of African and Asian descent to desire to lighten their skin. In most cases chemical products are used that ultimately redult in damaging their skin and with adverse health effects.

Some of these products are agreesively marketed as capable of archieving quick results but many contain harmful chemicals.

While whitening chemicals can be effective, prolonged use can be the cause of unwanted side effects to the user. This is just one of the many reasons why nature is still the best for you with all its health benefits and low risk of harmfull reactions and allergies

In this article I shall examine natural alternatives that are effective skin lighteners without the health hazards of chemicals.

These can also be used to exfoliate your skin and remove blemishes if you have white skin. Just apply less frequently, about once in 6 weeks.

If you want to have whiter skin without worrying about the potential harm you could get, the natural solution is always better.

The answer to a lighter skin does not always lie on the shelves inside beauty stores. Most of the time, you can find them in your kitchen or in the case of aloe vera and papaya in your garden.

Papaya and Aloe vera

Papaya also called pawpaw with scientific name Carica papaya, is the star of many skin whitening products nowadays because of its efficacy and exfoliating properties.

One safe option is to Mix papaya pulp with Aloe vera gel in a ratio of 4:1 and use as a mask. Apply to grease free wet skin and leave for 30 minutes. Then rinse and apply a nature based moisturiser. You can repeat 2 or 3 times weekly.

You can achieve what papaya beauty products can give without the undesirable health effects.

You can always eat the the left over since papaya is packed with nutrients with health benefits. Eating papayas gives you a natural way to get rid of many ailments, such as heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and atherosclerosis.

Papayas have the ability to help keep the immune and digestive systems healthy, which adds up to your overall wellbeing. It contains flavonoids, such as beta-carotene.

According to many studies, beta-carotene can help protect the body against the development of certain cancers, specifically mouth and lung cancers.

The other flavonoids that papayas contain include zeaxanthin, cryptoxanthin, and lutein, which all have potent antioxidant compounds that remove free radicals and help in preventing premature ageing.

A pot of growing aloe vera

Although Aloe Vera, scientific name Aloe barbadenis, is about 99% water, the remaining 1% is extremely powerful and it is thought this is because the close to 100 ingredients it is made of, work extremely well together (synergistically).

Aloe vera contains many minerals vital to the growth process and healthy function of all the body including the skin.

The ingredients in Aloe can be grouped into the following categories: Vitamins, Minerals, Sugars, Enzymes, Lignins, Amino Acids, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Fatty Acids, and Salicylic Acid which has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.

Rice, Tumeric and Milk

Rice contains a type of acid that works as a natural sunscreen and helps lighten your skin. You can use both rice flour as well as rice water for treating dark skin.

Grind 1 cup of uncooked rice into a fine powder. Now, add a little milk to it to form a paste. Optionally, add a little turmeric powder to the paste.

Apply the paste on your skin and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. Scrub it off, then rinse your skin with warm water. Do this 2 or 3 times a week.

Alternatively, rinse 1 to 2 cups of rice with water before cooking it. Strain the rice and keep the water. Soak your hands and feet in this rice water for 10 minutes, then rinse well with plain water. Do it once daily.

Effects of chemical skin lightening creams

Melanin, the pigment which is secreted by melanocytes, is responsible for the skin darkness. It is natures way of protecting the skin from harmful UV light from the sun.

Excessive skin lightening can expose the skin to the harmful effects of UV sun radiation, such as sunburn, photosensitivity, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, melanoma and skin cancers.

A sunblock cream is therefore essential.

Palm Wine - Aphrodisiac, Health Benefits to Man ?

Much better than beer and grape wine and loved by bees, Palm  wine is a natural juice, a white translucent sap of a variety of palm trees.  Although I have never climbed up a palm tree, I do own a few trees in the village. Professional tappers are normally hired to climb the palm. After tapping the tree, they position a calabash to collect the constant flow of nectar.  The nectar flows up the palm naturally by osmosis and is harvested twice a day for 5 consecutive days. No artificial prservatives are used. The most delicious palm wine or better called palm juice is gotten at the bottom of the tree when the taper comes down. I should know, been there, done it. In Igbo culture, a tribe that originates in West Africa  in the south-east of present day Nigeria,  the tapper gets paid in kind with a share of the wine. The owner of the palm tree gets the palm wine for 3 days and the tapper's share is 2 days. Then the palm tree gets to rest for 2 days...
