How to combat unpleasant Vaginal Odour




     Vaginal odour is a very common problem that most women have to deal with at least once or twice in their life.  An unpleasant ordour can be very depresding and difficult problem to get rid off.

'Let's look at possible causes and tips on how to maintain a healthy Vagina.

The normal Vaginal odour is a mild fishy smell. This is as a result of the normal bacterial flora that lives in the Vagina,  called lactobacillus. 

The lactobacillus, the good bacteria, plays a very important role by preventing more harmful bacteria and fungus from causing infection.

The Vagina has a self-cleaning mechanism. It can be washed internally with plain clean water or unscented, non- antibactetial soaps. 

Please do not use antiseptics inside the Vagina or abuse Antibiotics which kill the good bacteria.

A strong fishy odour down there, is caused by bacterial vaginosis. This results when the good bacteria has been eliminated.

Bacterial Vaginosis

Bacterial vaginosis (BV), perhaps the most common perpetrator of vaginal odor. Everyone has their share of their own body’s natural bacterial communities. 

When one has BV, it means that there is an overgrowth of certain kinds of bacteria. It is known that douching,  antiseptic soap or liquids like detol used to wash the Vagina and unprotected sex can trigger a case of BV. 

Every woman will go through at least one bout of BV in her lifetime.

Tampoons or foreign objects like condoms left inserted for too long. Poor hygiene and insertion of dirty objects and fingers.

Yeast (Candida)

Yeast infections have similar symptoms as bacterial vaginosis, but with the addition of a thick and white vaginal discharge. Thankfully, treatment does not include antibiotics. 

In the case of a vaginal yeast infection, one only needs anti-fungal treatments, usually around one to three rounds of it.

Pregnancy, when the high hormonal levels encourage the growth of fungus - yeast.

Vaginal odour can be due to a number of reasons, such as bacterial growth, yeast infections, poor hygiene, hormonal changes, and sexually transmitted diseases.

If the problem is due to infection, there may be symptoms like redness, itching, burning and irritation in the vaginal area.

No matter what the reason, vaginal odour can be very embarrassing. 

If you develop a strong vaginal odour accompanied by a coloured discharge then go see your doctor for a Medical check-up. You may have an infection that needs to be treated.




Cervical cancer

Vaginal discharge and odour can sometimes be due to cervical cancer. If you are 25/30yrs and above see your doctor as you will require cervical screening every 3 - 5yrs.

Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer amongst women after breast cancer. 

It is completely curable if the changes in the cervix are detected early by a simple out-patient clinic examination called the Pap smear.

Sadly we loose young women in their 30s to cervical cancer including celebrities Eva Peron, Jade Goody of Big brother, Joey Feek and Sarah Tait, the Australian Olympic gold medallist.

4 Home Remedies

Here are some effective, simple remedies you can use to relieve the odour.

1. Yogurt

Natural unpasteurised, unsweetened Yogurt is rich in lactobacillus bacteria, which helps restore the good bacteria go the Vagina. 

Once the pH level is balanced, the vaginal odour will be gone.

Eat a cup of unsweetened, plain yogurt daily. You can also take probiotic supplements.

Another option is to soak a tampon in plain yogurt and insert it into your body. Leave it in for a few hours, and rinse the area thoroughly after removing the tampon.

2. Garlic

Garlic is a natural antibiotic that can be great for dealing with vaginal infections as well as vaginal odour. 

The anti-fungal properties present in garlic will help fight a yeast infection and help your body get rid of bad bacteria.

Eat garlic in raw or cooked form on a daily basis. You can eat one or two raw garlic cloves on an empty stomach with a glass of warm water. 

You should also add garlic cloves or its paste to your dishes and salads.

Another option is to put a uncut clove of garlic in the vagina for an hour or two. Do this daily or a few times a week until you get rid of the problem.

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar can be used to fight vaginal odour. In fact, taking a bath with apple cider vinegar is one of the simplest ways to get rid of the bad odour. 

This will help fight off the toxins and bacteria that cause vaginal odour. It will also help restore the acidic quality of the vaginal flora.

Mix two cups of apple cider vinegar in warm bath water. Soak in it for about 20 minutes. Follow this remedy several times a week to get quick results.

You can also drink a glass of water mixed with one or two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily.

4.. Wear pure Cotton underwear




Cotton is the ideal underwear because it allows your vagina to breathe and can absorb excess moisture. 

You don't want to be sweaty down there since it encourages the growth of bad bacteria. So it's either cotton or starkers!

Others Tips for a healthy Vagina;

Avoid yeast and baked products.

Avoid antibiotic abuse.

Avoid perfumes around the Vagina.
