Cranberries are small, hard, round, red fruits with a flavor that many describe as sour. They grow on vines in freshwater, mostly in the northern United States of America, in states like Maine and in southern Canada.
Traditionally sailors eat them to prevent scurvy as a reult of their high vitamin C content.
They are related to blueberries and have become established as a treatment for urinary tract infections.
While the occasional use of antibiotics can be quite effective, if you suffer with chronic bladder infections, antibiotics can create more problems than they actually solve.
Bacteria can become resistant to antibiotics over time, which means you may need to take stronger doses, and maybe for longer periods, to treat the infection or you may need to switch to an entirely different antibiotic altogether.
If used too frequently, antibiotics are known to interfere with the natural, healthy, bacterial flora present in your digestive tract and vagina, which can also make you more susceptible to secondary infections, such as yeast infections.
Fortunately, there are more natural and healthier alternatives which work with your body and not against it.
One good example is Cranberry Juice.
1. Urinary Tract Infection
Urinary Tract Infection is one of the most common diseases affecting women. Women are more susceptible to UTI because the urethra is closer to the rectal area, making it easier for the bacteria to get into the bladder.
The symptoms of urinary tract infection include burning sensation while urinating, pain and urgency. Some cases can also be debilitating. UTI is prevalent during and after pregnancy.
Cranberry juice prevents the bacteria causing UTI from adhering to the bladder. The tannins in the juice will adhere to the tiny hair on the bacterial surface, preventing the bacteria from crossing the bladder wall.

D-Mannose is a simple sugar that is chemically related to glucose. In addition to being found in cranberries, it is also found in vegetables and fruits such as green beans and cabbage, tomatoes, peaches, apples, oranges, and blueberries.
Some quatity of D-Mannose is also produced naturally by the body.
When bacteria invade the bladder, they attach themselves to the mannose lining of the urinary tract where they colonize, developing into an infection.
What researchers have learned, however, is that the chemical structure of D-Mannose allows it to stick to the E. coli, wrapping it with a coating which makes the bacteria unable to attach itself to the bladder wall.
If the bacteria are unable to attach, then they are able to be washed out of the body in the urine.
Although physicians have known for a very long time that cranberry juice is helpful not only in healing urinary tract infections, but also in preventing them as well, D-Mannose is still relatively unknown in the medical community and has not been tested in human trials.
I routinely prescribe cranberries with success as an adjuvant to antibiotics in the treament of chronic or recurrent urinary tract infections.
Cranberry juice has many other health benefits;
2. Rich In Antioxidants
Cranberry juice is rich in potent antioxidants like flavonoids, ellagitannin, and anthocyanin.
Cranberries also have these antioxidants,
Quercetin
Myricetin
Peonidin
Ursolic acid
A-type proanthocyanidins
The primary flavonoid in cranberry juice is proanthocyanidin. Benzoic acid is another major phenolic compound found in cranberry juice.
Out of 20 fruits examined, cranberries have the highest concentration of the antioxidant phenol , followed by red grapes.
3. Anti-Inflammatory
The last thing you would want while lactating is contracting the flu or viral fever.
Consuming cranberry juice will keep you away from illness like flu, cold and viral fever. It contains anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties that will keep contaminants away from the body.
4. Adequate Hydration
Staying hydrated is very crucial post pregnancy. Cranberry juice will is a good way to hydrate the body. It is also an excellent way to maintain healthy body weight.
5. Replenishes The Microflora
Regular consumption of cranberry juice will also replenish your intestinal microflora. A poor diet upsets the balance of the microflora.

Cranberries are high in potassium which helps in lowering BP by increasing the excretion of sodium.

Cranberries reduce the amount of acid you make and keep it from sticking to your teeth. This helps stop tooth decay, and even helps prevent oral cancer.
Cranberries are fruits packed with natural goodness and health benefits.
Remember to drink lots of water! 2L a day of fluids and more in warm weather.
Cranberries should be taken in moderation as they can interfere with blood thinners like warfarin and make you prone to kidney stones.
