The active compounds in red wine are ethanol and a compound derived from red grapes known as resveratrol.
Resveratrol's role in preventing heart disease is well established by many large scientific studies across continents. In addition it has the following proven health benefits.
Excessive alcohol intake has its health drawbacks. Two glasses of wine is the maximum safe daily limit for women and three for men.
Prevents memory-loss
Prof Shetty and his team in Texas conducted a research believing that the mentioned compound has positive effects on a part of the brain called the hippocampus, which is important to memory.
Based on the research, the control rats that did not get resveratrol still have good spatial learning ability. However, after around 22 months, their new spatial memories begin to decline significantly.
Meanwhile, rats treated with resveratrol have improved memory and spatial learning.
Based on the findings, it is said that resveratrol can help aging rats not only retain good memory, but also boost mood and improve learning. These benefits could also be applied to humans.
The striking results presents hope for those who have problems with memory loss.

Alzheimer's disease
We have declining cognitive capacity as we reach middle age. Thankfully, the findings offer great news to people when it comes to treating memory loss in older individuals.
As a matter of fact, the study even goes further by claiming the compound, resveratrol, could help people who are afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease and other severe neurodegenerative conditions.
Anti-heart disease properties
Aside from being able to help combat heart diseases and improve brain and memory function, resveratrol’s benefits do not end here.
Anti-inflammatory
In fact, there are many studies that showed the compound to have anti-inflammatory properties.
The anti-inflammation properties along with the ability to promote growth of blood vessels are considered to be the main reasons why resveratrol can counteract memory loss due to aging.
This is because according to the scientists, the hippocampus can experience inflammation from time to time. There may also be cell death and reduced vasculature as a person grows old, contributing to age-related memory problems.
Anti-cancer
Red wine is a rich source of biologically active phytochemicals, chemicals found in plants. Particular compounds called polyphenols found in red wine, such as catechins and resveratrol, are known to have anti-oxidant or anti-cancer properties particularly bowel and pancreatic cancer.
Rochester researchers showed for the first time that a natural antioxidant found in grape skins and red wine can help destroy pancreatic cancer cells by reaching to the cell’s core energy source, or mitochondria, and crippling its function.

Anti-oxidant properties.
Resveratrol is known for its ability to protect plants from bacteria and fungi. Purified versions have been described in scientific journals as potential anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic agents, and for their ability to modulate cell growth.
Other well-known antioxidants derived from natural sources include caffeine, melatonin, flavonoids, polyphenols, vitamins C and E.
Reduces bad cholesterol.
Alcohol can raise levels of HDL (Good cholesterol) by as much as 5 to 15 percent, research shows. Red wine is particularly beneficial because its polyphenol antioxidants may also lower LDL (Bad cholesterol) levels. If you're not into vino, red grape juice can provide some of the same heart-healthy benefits.

Preventing blood clots and damage to your blood vessels.
Ethanol in red wine in moderate amounts improves mood and reduces stress.
Improves digestion when taken after meals.
Have a glass of red wine or a bunch of red grapes and live a longer, healthier, happier life! Please remember the max safe limit of red wine consumption is, 3 moderate glasses a day for men and 2 for women.
