Bra, is it more harm than good ?

A young woman exercising her chest muscles

Women over the years have been fed the false notion that wearing a bra prevents sagging of the breasts.

Apart from firm support for sports women and preventing milk dripping in lactating women, the bra could be doing more harm than good.

Bras are said to combat sagging of breasts, especially those who are on the larger side. Aside from that, many of these bras are marketed to provide greater comfort and even less backaches.

“A bra will hold up your breasts to give you the shape and look you want, but it can't prevent further sagging, which is caused by age and gravity,” says Dr. Mills.

It does make breast sagging worse.

For more than 15 years, from 1997 to 2014, Jean-Denis Rouillon, a French professor and sports science expert, has been studying women’s breast.

He discovered that those who wear a bra experience more sagging on average than those who don’t! Yes they do.

A full 7mm sag was observed after one year of wearing a bra, according to the French professor from the University Hospital of Besancon.

Professor Rouillon has found out that bras don’t offer real benefit to women even after many years of research.

The French professor conducted a study of 335 volunteers who were aged 18 to 35 years old. At the first stage of the study, Rouillon’s medical team discovered that “bra free” women’s breasts started much firmer than those who wore bras.

Also,  they didn’t have as much stretch marks. The scientists used a device called a caliper to measure the distance between the breasts and position of the nipple. They also utilized a slide rule.

"Medically, physiologically, anatomically, breasts gain no benefit from being denied gravity," Rouillon said.

This research was quite comprehensive and is considered the most complete study of the effect of bras on breasts, compared to other studies conducted in other parts of the world.

In another study in 1990, Japanese scientists also experimented on the relationship between the breasts and bras.

Their research study concluded that bras do not really offer anti-sagging benefits.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

A 2007 study of 132 women also revealed that breast-feeding had no effect on the degree of breast sagging.

The sagging that follows childbirth is largely as a result of inappropriate weight gain in pregnancy.

The Conclusion

Due to the findings of these studies performed by the French and Japanese medical teams, and from observation in other cultures, it is concluded that constant wearing of bras by young women will not provide benefits for the women's breasts.

As a Breast surgeon, with several years of experience in Europe, the Americas and Africa, I have no reason not to agree with these findings.

This is because wearing a bra prevents the growth of supportive connective tissue and muscle which support the breasts naturally.

Since the suspension muscles will not work correctly, the tissues slacken as you constantly wear a bra.

Breast and Chest exercises

As a woman, sagging is something you don’t want to happen to your breasts.

If you want to prevent your breasts from drooping over time, it is recommended that you leave your bra behind and do regular exercises that firm your pectoralis muscles.

The pectoralis or chest muscles are the foundation upon which your breasts rest. You want a firm and solid foundation.

The research contradicts everything that bras and their brands claim.

If you are a young woman and want to experience less drooping and you don’t want back pain, you should just leave your bra behind and please don’t buy a new one.

Palm Wine - Aphrodisiac, Health Benefits to Man ?

Much better than beer and grape wine and loved by bees, Palm  wine is a natural juice, a white translucent sap of a variety of palm trees.  Although I have never climbed up a palm tree, I do own a few trees in the village. Professional tappers are normally hired to climb the palm. After tapping the tree, they position a calabash to collect the constant flow of nectar.  The nectar flows up the palm naturally by osmosis and is harvested twice a day for 5 consecutive days. No artificial prservatives are used. The most delicious palm wine or better called palm juice is gotten at the bottom of the tree when the taper comes down. I should know, been there, done it. In Igbo culture, a tribe that originates in West Africa  in the south-east of present day Nigeria,  the tapper gets paid in kind with a share of the wine. The owner of the palm tree gets the palm wine for 3 days and the tapper's share is 2 days. Then the palm tree gets to rest for 2 days...
