Sketch Watermelon health benefits

Watermelon whoose scientific name is Citrullus lanatus is grown in tropical and sub tropical regions and has several varieties.

In this article I will examine its scientificaly proven health benefits.

A study in 2022, traced a 6000 year link to the Egusi (Melon seed) , very popular part of the cuisine in Southern Nigeria, West Africa.

It does not only contain natural sugar and water, it is one of the most nutritious fruits. It contains vitamin A and C which are very important for the body.

It is commonly eaten raw in salads, can be juiced and its rind is efible when cooked.

Its black or dark brown seeds have a high concebtration of L-citrulline.

Lets look at the many other health benefits of watermelon.

Exercise muscle fatigue

It also contains amino acids and L-citrulline, which helps the body repair muscles faster after exercise.

Juice 1/3 of fresh watermelon and drink before your next workout. This contains approximately about one gram of l-citrulline, an amino acid that seems to protect against muscle pain.

Antioxidant properties

Watermelon contains antioxidant properties that help increase muscle protein and enhance athletic performance.

After an intense exercise, you may feel pain later because of small tears in muscle fibers which cause inflammation.

A cup of watermelon contains 1.5 times more lycopene than a large fresh tomato. Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that helps prevent the free radicals from causing cell damage and can improve your immune system.

Moreover, this powerful antioxidant has been shown to lower the risk of cancer in the body.

Anti-inflammation

Watermelon in addition to citrulline and lycopene, has anti-inflammatory properties which helps in relieving muscle aches and preventing muscle fatigue.

Watermelon combats chronic inflammation.

Asthma Prevention

Your risks of developing an asthma can maximize if you’re not consuming enough nutrients, especially Vitamin C.

Hence consuming this fruit can help increase your nutrient intake.

Cancer

Watermelons are an excellent source of antioxidants and can help combat the formation of free radicals that are the cause of cancer.

Lycopene intake, for example, has been linked to a decreased risk of prostate cancer prevention in several studies.

Lowers High Blood Pressure

According to the American Journal of Hypertension, watermelons are known to reduce blood pressure of middle-aged adults with hypertension. This is attributable to its high L-citrulline content.

The study also showed that watermelon consumption improved arterial function! See Watermelon, 'Viagra naturale'!

Improves the Neural system

This vital nutrient aids in sleep, muscle movement, learning and memory. It also helps in the transmissions of nerve impulses, maintains the structure of cellular membrane and helps in the absorption of fat.

Skin health

It’s a food for great skin! Watermelons contain vitamin A, a nutrient required for sebum production that keeps hair moisturized.

Vitamin A is also necessary for the growth of all bodily tissues, including skin and hair.

Watermelon helps prevent erectile dysfunction, ED

I routinely recommend watermelon to my patients as an adjuvant for the trestment of ED.

In this regard, the rind and seeds are preferable to its red juicy, sweet core.

Citruline in watermelons helps with the production of Nitric oxide, NO. NO is a vasodilator and therefore improves arterial blood flow including to the sexual organs. Thereby improving your erections.

Hydration

Watermelon is about 95% water. Pleasant tasting water which is easy to consume. Its packed with potassium and minerals which makes it ideal for hydarion in a hot summers day juiced in a smoothie or eaten raw.

Watermelon, the fruit packed with lots of health benefits.

Palm Wine - Aphrodisiac, Health Benefits to Man ?

Much better than beer and grape wine and loved by bees, Palm  wine is a natural juice, a white translucent sap of a variety of palm trees.  Although I have never climbed up a palm tree, I do own a few trees in the village. Professional tappers are normally hired to climb the palm. After tapping the tree, they position a calabash to collect the constant flow of nectar.  The nectar flows up the palm naturally by osmosis and is harvested twice a day for 5 consecutive days. No artificial prservatives are used. The most delicious palm wine or better called palm juice is gotten at the bottom of the tree when the taper comes down. I should know, been there, done it. In Igbo culture, a tribe that originates in West Africa  in the south-east of present day Nigeria,  the tapper gets paid in kind with a share of the wine. The owner of the palm tree gets the palm wine for 3 days and the tapper's share is 2 days. Then the palm tree gets to rest for 2 days. Palm wine has the sweet tast
