The kidneys are a pair of bean-shaped organs located along the posterior side of the abdomen, they have the heavy responsibility of removing waste and toxins from the bloodstream.
These vital organs work with other organs to regulate blood pressure, increase red blood cell production, and synthesize vitamin D.
A healthy diet, exercise, and staying hydrated are essential for supporting your kidneys.
Some people are however prone to develop stones within the kidneys which can then move down the urinary tract where they may cause obstruction.
What Are Kidney Stones?
As the kidneys filter waste from the blood, they create urine. Sometimes, salts and other minerals mainly calcium in urine stick together to form small kidney stones.
These stones range from the size of a sugar crystal to a ping pong ball, but they are rarely noticed unless they cause a blockage.
They may cause intense pain if they break loose and push into the ureters where the obstruct the flow of urine.
There are proven simple natural home remedies that can help dissolve the small stones or prevent stones from being formed in the first place.
1. Water therapy
Drink a lot of water. Water dilutes the substances in urine that lead to stones. Strive to drink enough fluids to pass 2 liters of urine a day. Approximately 2.5L - 3L daily.
It will help to include some citrus beverages like lemon, cranberry and orange juice. The citrate in these beverages helps block stone formation.
2. Apple cider vinegar - ACV
ACV contains citric acid which softens and dissolves kidney stones. It acts as an effective internal cleanser that flushes the kidney to remove the formed stones.
1. ACV has an alkalizing effect on blood and urine, helping digestion better break down and remove kidney stones.
2. It aids the overall digestive process by stimulating the production of hydrochloric acid.
3. This prevents the formation of new kidney stones.
4. ACV is highly acidic in nature and balances the body by dissolving the crystals that form into stones
5. ACV has acetic and phosphoric acids which completely dissolve or reduce the size of kidney stones, allowing them to pass freely.
6. It also reduces or eliminates the pain caused by kidney stones.
Method
1. Mix 2 tablespoons ACV in a glass of fresh water.
2. Drink the solution frequently throughout the day before meals to dissolve and clear the kidney stones from the body.
3. After the stones have passed, continue drinking the solution 1 – 2 times weekly to prevent the formation of new stones.
3. Lemon or Lime juice
Recent research at the Department of Urology, University of Wisconsin shows that lemonade is effective in reducing the formation of kidney stones in those who are prone to it.
All their kidney stone patients are routinely placed on lemonade therapy.
Lemon juice contains high levels of citric acid, not to be confused with ascorbic acid (vitamin C).
While lemon juice contains both, citric acid seems to contribute to reducing the chances of developing calcium oxalate stones in urinary tract.
4. Fruits and Vegetables
Eating less animal-based protein and eating more fruits and vegetables will help decrease urine acidity and this will help reduce the chance for stone formation.
Red meat also increases your chance of developing uric acid based stones.
Stones are formed in the Kidney but can be found in any part of the urinary tract |
5. Low Salt diet
Sodium, often from salt, causes the kidneys to excrete more calcium into the urine.
High concentrations of calcium in the urine combine with oxalate and phosphorus to form stones.
Reducing sodium intake is preferred to reducing calcium intake. You also have the added health benefit of reducing your chances of getting hypertension and having a stroke.
6. Parsley
A favorite herb among chefs, parsley is an aromatic, flavorful herb commonly used in herbal medicine.

As a diuretic, it’s helpful for reducing the build up of minerals such as calcium and toxins in the kidneys and entire urinary tract.
7. Millet (fura)
Millet is packed with minerals such as copper, phosphorous, magnesium and manganese. It is loaded with dietary fiber too.

Millet is packed with minerals such as copper, phosphorous, magnesium and manganese. It is loaded with dietary fiber too.
It is beneficial for individuals who suffer from kidney stones, as well as other conditions of the urinary tract.
I personally advise my patients to incorporate millet in their diet for breakfast. The feedback is very positive.
For centuries millet has been used by traditional healers for the treatment and prevention of various maladies of the kidneys and the rest of the renal system including cystitis in women.
8. Magnesium
You can also consider taking magnesium to help treat incontinence, especially if you experience other signs of magnesium deficiency like leg cramps at night.

Magnesium is important for muscle relaxation throughout the body. Thus, it can help reduce bladder muscle spasms and allow complete emptying of the bladder.
It may help relax the smooth muscles of the urinary tract and aid natural passage of stones. A popular brand is Andrews liver salt.
9. Weight reduction if overweight
If these simple measures don't get rid of your stone then it maybe time to consult a urologist.

Remember stones may lead to kidney failure by obstructing the flow of urine. Prevention is better than cure.
10. Adequate Iodine Intake
Iodine is found naturally in adequate amounts in sea salt and sea food. Iodine is essential for normal functioning of the thyroid glands which help regulate blood calcium levels.
When the calcium level is high in the bloodstream, the thyroid gland releases calcitonin.

When the calcium level is high in the bloodstream, the thyroid gland releases calcitonin.
Calcitonin slows down the activity of the osteoclasts found in bone. This decreases blood calcium levels.
When calcium levels decrease, this stimulates the parathyroid gland to release parathyroid hormone.
