Coconut water, nature's Health drink



     
   Very low in calories, naturally fat free and cholesterol free, more potassium than four bananas, and super hydrating, coconut water is quite simply a nutural wonder drink.

These are just a few of the many benefits of the World's latest health drink craze,  Coconut water. Yes, the world is waking up to what Tropical Island and coastal dwellers have known for centuries.

The demand is also propelled by celebrity and athlete endorsements and promises to hydrate the body and help with a whole host of conditions, from hangovers to cancer and kidney stones desolution.

Naturally refreshing, coconut water has a sweet, nutty taste. It contains easily digested carbohydrate in the form of sucrose and
electrolytes. 

Not to be confused with the high fat coconut milk or oil, coconut water is a clear liquid in the fruit’s center that is tapped from young, green coconuts.

Coconut water is a very refreshing drink to beat tropical summer thirst.  It has few calories, less sodium, and more potassium compared to Gatorade or most sports drinks.

It also has many health benefits.

Anti-ageing

It reverses the aging process! 

Research studies suggest that cytokinins, kinetin and trans-zeatin, in coconut water have significant anti-ageing, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-clot formation effects. It reverses the aging process, trust me.

Rehydration

Coconut water has been generally offered to patients with diarrhea in many tropic regions to replace the fluid loss from the gastrointestinal tract and to reduce the need for hospitalisation. 

Suitable for Children 

The osmolarity of tender coconut water is very close to that of the
WHO recommended Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORS) solution. Fresh coconut water is therefore suitable for the young ones.

Presence of other biological constituents like amino acids, enzymes, minerals, and fatty acids may account for its slightly higher osmolarity.



Unlike WHO ORS, its water is very low in sodium and chlorides, but rich in sugars and amino acids. 

This well-balanced fluid composition, along with much-needed calories, would be an ideal drink and superior to any other soft drink beverage available in the market to correct the dehydration.

If you are exploring somewhere in the tropics and you need a hygenic wholesome drink, you can't do better than coconut water.

Aids Digestion

Coconut water is composed of many naturally occurring bioactive enzymes such as Acid phosphatase, Catalase, dehydrogenase, Diastase, Peroxidase and RNA polymerases. These enzymes help in the digestive process.

Despite being very light in consistency, its water proportionately has better composition of minerals like calcium, iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc than some of the fruit juices like oranges.

Its high concentration of fiber, aids in the prevention of indigestion and reduces the occurrence of acid reflux.

Packed with Multi-vitamins

Its liquid is also a very good source of the B complex vitamins such as riboflavin, niacin, thiamin, pyridoxine, and folates. These vitamins are essential because the human body requires them from external sources to replenish body stores.

Fresh coconut water also has a small amount of vitamin C which provides about 2.4 mg or 4% of RDA. Vitamin C is a water-soluble ant-oxidant.

Skin therapy

For those with acne or other blemishes on the skin, topical application of coconut water can be helpful as it has the ability to clear up and tone the skin.

It moisturizes the skin from within and eliminates large amounts of oil. This explains why products such as facial creams, shampoos, conditioners and lotions that contain traces of coconut extract are more effective.

Electrolytes and Blood pressure regulation

Coconut water, unlike any beverage on the market, contains five essential electrolytes that are present in the human body. 

These include, calcium, magnesium, phosphorous, potassium and sodium. Because of its unique composition, coconut water can be enjoyed by individuals with varying medical conditions.

Coconut water carries a very good amount of electrolyte potassium. 100 ml of coconut water has 250 mg of potassium and 105 mg of sodium. Together, these electrolytes help replenish electrolyte deficiency in the body due to diarrhea.

Sports drink

The ingredients in coconut water are much more effective at hydrating the human body than those of sports and energy drinks. During rigorous exercise or extended periods of physical activity, the human body loses mineral rich fluids. 

However, coconut water serves as an excellent replacement medium with 600 mg of potassium and 5 mg of natural sugar per glass, unlike your favorite sports drink that only contains half of the potassium content and five times the amount of processed sugar. 

In addition, the sodium count is only 25 mg, which is relatively low compared to the 41 mg and 20 mg found in sports drinks and energy drinks respectively.

Ultimate Hangover remedy

If you ever drink more alcohol than your belly can handle, consume coconut water to settle your stomach. 

It will also replace those essential electrolytes that exit the body if you experience bouts of frequent urination and vomiting.

The humble naturally refreshing tropical coconut water is much more than a  thirst quencher. I love it.
